Causes Of Chronic Headaches

Do you struggle with chronic headaches? Your Federal Way, WA, chiropractor, Dr. Andrew Winger of Redondo Family Chiropractic can find the source of your pain and offer treatments that help you enjoy more pain-free days.

7 reasons your head may hurt

Chronic headaches happen for many reasons, including:

  • Injuries: Whiplash or a concussion may be the reason you've developed a chronic headache. Any blow to your head or a blow to the body that shakes your head and neck, even if the injury didn't seem major, could be the source of your headache pain.
  • Stress: Have you noticed that you tend to get headaches when you feel stressed or overwhelmed? You may have tension headaches. These headaches occur when stress tightens the muscles in your head and neck. Unfortunately, tension headaches can linger long after you no longer feel stressed.
  • Subluxations: Your headache pain may be due to a subluxation, a misalignment of your vertebrae. Misalignments may also press painfully on nerves or put added stress on muscles, increasing muscle tension in your head or neck.
  • Migraines: Migraines tend to affect women more than men and cause headaches that last hours or days. Before the headache starts, you may notice flashing lights, dizziness, sensitivity to light, or other unusual symptoms.
  • Use of Digital Devices: Text neck could be the cause of your pain. The condition occurs in people who spend a great deal of time looking down at cellphones and digital devices. In addition to headaches, text neck can cause upper back and shoulder pain.
  • Rebound Pain: The very medication you use to treat your headaches may be to blame for your pain. The problem happens if you've been using an over-the-counter pain reliever for a while and stop taking it. Withdrawal symptoms cause headaches, prompting you to take the medication again, creating a cycle of never-ending headache pain. Rebound pain can also be related to caffeine intake.
  • Eyestrain: Spending too much time reading or using digital devices can strain the muscles that control your eyes. Pain in the muscles, headaches, and dry eye could be signs that you have eyestrain.

How your chiropractor treats chronic headaches

During your visit to the Federal Way chiropractic office, your chiropractor will ask a few questions about your headaches and perform an examination. This information will help him determine why you have chronic headaches and prepare a treatment plan.

Spinal manipulation is often part of the treatment plan for chronic headaches. During the therapy, your chiropractor uses his hands or a small handheld device to realign the vertebrae in your spine. Spinal manipulation eases pain, reduces tension on muscles and tendons, improves blood circulation, and may reduce the frequency of your chronic headaches.
