What Are Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulators (Tens)?

Are you dealing with chronic or persistent pain? If so, you may find that over-the-counter medications just aren’t cutting it, but you also don’t want to be reliant on strong pain medications that often come with some pretty scary side effects. If so, you may be on the lookout for drug-free alternatives that offer ample pain relief. One of the best ways a chiropractor can treat and manage many forms of pain is through a treatment option known as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation, or TENS.

What is transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS)?

TENS, sometimes referred to as electrotherapy, is a non-invasive electrical nerve stimulation system that delivers mild electrical impulses to certain areas of the body to lessen or block pain signals in the body. Along with its pain-blocking benefits, TENS can also stimulate the production of endorphins, which also improves mood and is considered “nature’s painkiller”. Together, this system provides incredible relief from severe, chronic, and treatment-resistant forms of pain.

Who can benefit from TENS?

Many people dealing with chronic or severe pain can benefit from TENS. You may benefit from electrical nerve stimulation treatment if you are dealing with,

  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Post-operative pain
  • Joint pain
  • Diabetic neuropathy-related pain
  • Endometriosis
  • Sports injuries
  • Labor and menstrual pains

Of course, TENS is not right for everyone. Individuals with epilepsy, pacemakers, implants, or certain heart conditions, as well as women who are pregnant, are not ideal candidates for this chiropractic treatment. Talk to your chiropractor to find out if TENS is right for you.

Does it hurt?

No, TENS is not a painful or uncomfortable treatment. You may feel tingling or some slight muscle contractions, but that’s all. If there is any discomfort, the level of stimulation may need to be adjusted.

How long does pain relief last after TENS?

Everyone’s results are different, but this is something that you can discuss with your chiropractor before you start your TENS treatment. Some people may experience instant relief while others may notice a gradual difference within the first 24 hours after their first session. Some people also report experiencing longer periods of remission from pain, which means that TENS does have the ability to provide long-term relief.

If you want to learn more about TENS, or if you’re interested in finding out if it could be an effective treatment option for alleviating your pain, then call a chiropractor today to schedule an evaluation.
