Borja Iglesias, born on January 17, 1993, in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, is a Spanish football player who plays as a striker. In his early career, he went through several youth academies before joining Celta Vigo in 2013, starting out in the reserve team. Later, during a loan spell at Zaragoza, he became a prolific goalscorer in Segunda División. In 2018, he moved to Espanyol, and in 2019 transferred to Real Betis. During his time at Betis, he was the top scorer in the Copa del Rey and named La Liga’s Player of the Month. In 2024, he had a brief loan spell at Bayer Leverkusen; later that same year, he returned to Celta Vigo on loan before signing permanently, helping the team qualify for the UEFA Europa League. In September 2022, he was called up to the Spanish national team for matches in the UEFA Nations League against Switzerland and Portugal. That year, he finished as Spain’s top domestic scorer with 20 goals; however, he was not included in the World Cup squad, becoming the first Spanish player since 1994 to achieve such a feat yet miss out on the tournament. In August 2023, following Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation, forcibly kissing female football player Jenni Hermoso at the Women’s World Cup award ceremony, Iglesias announced he would withdraw from the national team until Rubiales resigned.
